Maintaining Sadao S. Munemori Memorial Interchange Sign

Late last year, the sign designating a Los Angeles freeway interchange named in honor of World War II hero Sadao Munemori was knocked off its wooden posts after an apparent automobile accident.

Keith Kawamoto, one of our chapter board members, filed a report with Caltrans in November and was proud to report at this month’s board meeting that the sign has been replaced.

Munemori, who was born in Los Angeles, was a U.S. Army soldier who sacrificed his life to save those of his fellow soldiers during combat in Italy in 1945. He was 22 and was the only Japanese American to be awarded the Medal of Honor during or immediately after WWII.

The memorial sign is at the interchange of the southbound 405 and 105 freeways near the Los Angeles International Airport.
